From my childhood, I was interested in collecting miniature models of various items right from miniature bathroom accessories to cushion sofas. Well it may sound stupid and weird that I am still collecting but I don’t care what others feel. I believe its fine till you dont hate what you are doing. I find it so interesting as I see daily life in small doll house miniatures. Most people disapprove with me and say I am lunatic but when you try it, you will find it interesting as well as have fun. The four giant “Galilean” moons orbiting Jupiter are the last survivors of at least five generations of moons that once circled the gas giant. All the other moons - and there could have been 20 or more - were devoured by the planet in the early days of the solar system.

The four Galilean moons have played a key role in the history of science - their discovery by Galileo 400 years ago provided irrefutable evidence that not all bodies orbited the Earth. But until recently, nobody had suspected that Jupiter had once had many more moons.

Astronomers have long been aware of a mystery thrown up by simulations of the way Jupiter and its moons formed. These models indicate that the mass of the debris disc around Jupiter, from which the moons formed, was several tens of a per cent of the mass of giant planet. And yet only 2 per cent is enough to make the moons we see today.

The extra mass can be explained if other moons formed while the debris disc was still present. A key process is therefore the interaction between the growing moons and the disc material still flowing in from the solar system. This interaction would have caused the early moons to spiral in towards Jupiter and eventually be “eaten”.

There could have been five generations of moons. The current Galilean moons formed just as the inflow of material into the disc from the solar system choked off, so they escaped the fate of their unfortunate predecessors.

In each generation the total mass of the moons was the same, but the number of moons could have varied. This could have implications for the solar system as a whole. Rocky planets may take as long as 10 million years to aggregate, chunk by chunk. The process continues long after the debris disc around the sun has blown away, so these planets would not have been at risk of spiralling inwards.

In contrast, the gaseous cores of gas giants like Saturn and Jupiter condense out of the solar debris disc very quickly via gas shrinkage. This means they would have had time to interact with the debris disc. It is entirely conceivable that the sun may have swallowed numerous gas cores before the current stable configuration of the solar system emerged.

I was sitting like a dumb idiot, browsing the net for some interesting stuff. I  had a hard time since I didn’t get any and I dozed off in front of my computer. Viruses that cause diarrhoea and vomiting may also trigger diabetes in children with a particular genetic make-up. The finding could one day lead to “diabetes” vaccines that might be targeted at children with certain genes.

Some children are genetically predisposed to develop type-1 diabetes, but studies of identical twins show that if one twin gets the disease, the other has only a 40% chance of developing it too, suggesting that an environmental trigger is also at work.

One suspect is a family of viruses called Coxsackie B enteroviruses (CVBs). In type-1 diabetes, the body attacks and destroys insulin-producing pancreatic cells called beta cells. It is thought that when CVBs infect beta cells, they may trigger this “autoimmunity”, but only in children with a particular genetic make-up.

This would make sense as the genes that are linked to type-1 diabetes code for proteins involved in the immune response. However, evidence supporting the theory has relied on a small number of samples. For example, in 2007, evidence of CVB infection was reported in two of five patients with type-1 diabetes, but not in 26 non-diabetic controls.

This is the first time that scientists have been able to provide such extensive evidence for the relationship between enteroviral infection of the beta cells and the development of type 1 diabetes.

The next step will be working out which strains of CBV trigger type-1 diabetes, and testing whether these can be used in a vaccine that prevents the disease.

Well, this is one of my embarrassing situation in my life but turned out to be a damn good nite. Since I share everyting with you guys, I dont mind to do this also. It so happened that my dear or ”so called” dear friend, to put it ina more appropriate way, invited me to his birthday. It was half past 8 when I arrived there. The place was so damn crowded and I got my feet stamped as i walked in. After a while, I decided to get a drink. Well, I was just in my own world still searching for that ’so called’ friend but he was no where to be seen. While my eyes were searching for him, it suddenly came to a stop when I saw this gorgeous lady. She must have been in her late 30’s but she was hot. She came near me and smiled at me. I was thrilled as I was getting reponses to my advances. As a gentleman, I pulled out a chair and offered her a seat. She gladly accepted, glanced at me and asked me if I was James. I was a bit horrified as well as excited because I never expected her to know my name. But then I pulled out my playboy collar and said, ‘Yes, thats me’. After a few mintues into the conversation, I found that she had come to know about me from Patrick (so called friend). Mr. Patrick had also informed her that I was a geek who liked watches that too Wristwatches a lot. After a  hearty 10-mintue conversaton, she finally bid me farewell. I was about to ask her number when she replied smiling, ‘Sorry James I dont date geeks but I rather spend time with you alone’. Wow!!! quite a night. Ain’t it?

A SKELETON exhumed from a grave in Venice is being claimed as the first known example of the “vampires” widely referred to in contemporary documents.

Matteo Borrini of the University of Florence in Italy found the skeleton of a woman with a small brick in her mouth (see right) while excavating mass graves of plague victims from the Middle Ages on Lazzaretto Nuovo Island in Venice.

At the time the woman died, many people believed that the plague was spread by “vampires” which, rather than drinking people’s blood, spread disease by chewing on their shrouds after dying. Grave-diggers put bricks in the mouths of suspected vampires to stop them doing this, Borrini says.

The belief in vampires probably arose because blood is sometimes expelled from the mouths of the dead, causing the shroud to sink inwards and tear. Borrini, who presented his findings at a meeting of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences in Denver, Colorado, last week, claims this might be the first such vampire to have been forensically examined.

However, Peer Moore-Jansen of Wichita State University in Kansas says he has found similar skeletons in Poland and that while Borrini’s finding is exciting, “claiming it as the first vampire is a little ridiculous”.
